The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a comprehensive history book titled “Safer Shipping, Cleaner Seas – A Celebration of 75 Years of IMO” in honour of its 75th anniversary.

The book was started by departing IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and was presented on December 6 at a farewell party.

The book, which has 213 pages and is organised into four sections, traces the history of the IMO, describes its work and structural development in the second half of the 20th century, and discusses the issues the organisation is facing in the 21st century.

Major IMO Conventions are highlighted, significant historical figures are photographed, and memorable events such as the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 2018 visit to IMO Headquarters are included.

In the introduction, Secretary-General Lim expressed gratitude to those who have led IMO throughout its history and emphasised the cooperative effort to guarantee safe and environmentally responsible shipping in the future for all people on the planet.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, also leaves a message in the book lauding the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for advancing environmentally friendly shipping.

A steering committee of the IMO Secretariat led by maritime journalist John Barnes oversaw and completed the compilation of “Safer shipping, cleaner seas – A celebration of 75 years of IMO”.

The book costs £70 and can be bought at the IMO Staff Association store at IMO Headquarters. Every dollar made from sales will go toward funding the IMO Technical Cooperation Fund.
