Spanish Authorities Seizes 7.5 Tons of Cocaine Hidden in Tuna Fish Cargo Containers

On Tuesday, Spanish police at the northwestern port of Vigo took away 7.5 tons of cocaine from South America stuffed with frozen tuna fish destined for distribution across Europe.

According to police, it was the largest drug bust in the history of Galicia, the Atlantic area whose rugged coastline — the longest one in Spain — has been used to smuggle drugs for decades.

In a separate operation, police discovered 3.5 tons of cocaine stashed in cargo containers in Valencia’s eastern port.

Police said 20 individuals from two Balkan organizations had been arrested in what they called a “major blow” against one of Europe’s toughest distribution networks.

According to investigators, the smuggling network established an import company that would trade frozen seafood and fish abroad as well as engage in real estate.

It claimed that after months of investigation, its investigators discovered that the company was concealing its role in drug smuggling through the shipment of a large number of containers by sea from an array of businesses at origin, with the Iberian Peninsula usually as the destination.
